“Working with the Water Survey of Canada gives me the opportunity to get involved in many projects that interest me.”

Lyssa Maurer has been with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) for seven years. She is currently working as an Expert Technologist with the National Hydrological Service (NHS), specializing in Innovation Monitoring and Data Collection.

Lyssa works with the National Hydrological Service (NHS) to develop new methods to measure water levels and collect discharge data in streams and lakes across Canada. She is both excited and motivated by the technological advancements the organization has adopted in recent years. This vital water data had previously been measured with the same equipment for upwards of 100 years, says Lyssa. The modernization of these water monitoring services will allow the Water Survey of Canada to provide Canadians with the most accurate and timely information possible on our rivers and lakes.

Throughout her time working with the Water Survey of Canada, Lyssa has most enjoyed the encouragement she has received from her supervisors and managers to get involved in a range of interesting projects. By taking advantage of these valuable opportunities, Lyssa has gained new knowledge and a deeper appreciation for her field. For four years, Lyssa worked to maintain the Water Survey of Canada stations in Haida Gwaii, an archipelago off British Columbia’s west coast. She remembers working in this beautiful location as one of the many highlights of her career with ECCC.
