Objective
The objective of the Clean Energy Dialogue (CED) is to enhance bilateral collaboration on the development of clean energy science and technologies to reduce greenhouse gases and combat climate change.
Key elements
Three Working Groups composed of Canadian and U.S. government officials collaborate to develop multi-year Action Plans in consultation with key stakeholders:
- Carbon Capture and Storage Working Group
- Electricity Grid Working Group
- Clean Energy Research and Development and Energy Efficiency Working Group
The Action Plans are implemented through projects led by Canadian and U.S. federal officials, in collaboration with the private sector, academia, utilities, and sub-federal governments as appropriate.
The work is coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of International Affairs and the Canadian CED Secretariat at Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Expected results
Further progress on the development and deployment of carbon capture and storage technologies in the U.S. and Canada.
Advance bilateral collaboration to build a more efficient electricity grid based on clean and renewable generation.
Expand bilateral collaboration on clean energy research and development and energy efficiency initiatives.
Canada’s involvement
The Clean Energy Dialogue is an important mechanism for Canada to facilitate joint work with its most important international partner in advancing the clean energy technologies that will enable the transition to a low-carbon economy. The joint pursuit of clean energy solutions is consistent with our highly integrated economies and energy markets, our common greenhouse gas reduction targets, and aligned regulations for the transportation sector.
Results / progress
Activities
Since its launch in 2009, the CED has conducted over 70 projects that have resulted in four bilateral agreements/MOUs, and many workshops, conferences, reports, studies, and web products.
Reports
The CED Secretariat, in consultation with Working Group co-leads and the U.S. Department of Energy, publishes Reports to Leaders to take stock of the CED’s accomplishments and chart the way forward. These reports can be found on the Guiding Documents page of the CED website.
