Blue Mountain‐Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Parkland

Backgrounder

The Government of Canada invested $860,000 from the Canada Nature Fund for the Halifax Regional Municipality to purchase 135 hectares of urban wilderness.

The additional land, acquired by the Halifax Regional Municipality in 2019, shapes and defines the boundaries of several of the municipality’s urban areas. The new property connects with the existing provincial crown parklands, which span about the size of the peninsula. This wilderness area is made up of a unique mix of natural forest stands, lakes, streams, wetlands and breathtaking vistas.

Just a stone’s throw from downtown Halifax, Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Park helps to protect urban wild spaces while offering greater opportunity for residents to get out into nature. Protecting this park will contribute to Canada’s goal of doubling the amount of nature protected across Canada’s lands and oceans.
