Science Horizons Youth Internship Program

Backgrounder

The Science Horizons Youth Internship Program is part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment and Skills Strategy. Science Horizons supports green jobs for youth by offering internship opportunities to recent post-secondary graduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Science Horizons provides wage subsidies to eligible employers across Canada, including small and medium-sized enterprises, to hire recent college and university graduates for internships in the environmental and clean-technology sector. Interns receive experience working on environmental projects lasting six to twelve months. Up to $15,000 in funding is available to employers for interns they hire.

Program funding is aimed at employers. Both employers and interns participate in the application process, and interns are hired directly by organizations that have received Science Horizons funding.

The program has received $14 million of funding in 2019–20 to support at least 900 internships and is open for 2019–20 applications from employers and interns alike. Since it began, Science Horizons has received over $59 million in funding, supporting more than 4500 internships for young Canadians.
