Nitrogen oxides: main emission sources
Estimated total NOx emissions in Canada in year 2010 were 2,060 kilotonnes (without open sources e.g. forest fires, prescribed burning). The primary emitting sources are:
- transportation sources (e.g. on-road and off-road motor vehicles and engines, rail)
- fossil-fuelled electric power plants
- upstream oil and gas industry (e.g. natural gas plants, oil sands)
Pie chart of nitrogen oxide emissions for 2010: 55 percent represents transportation, 21 percent upstream oil and gas, 12 percent other industrial, 10 percent electric power generation and 2 percent other sources.
