Archived: Code of Practice for management of air emissions from pulp and paper mills: chapter 5
5 Definitions
- Biofuel
-
fuel derived from renewable biological sources (plants or animal waste) such as wood residue, wastewater treatment biosolids or biogas.
- Boiler
-
combustion equipment that transfers thermal energy from the fuel to a heat transfer fluid.
- Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS)
-
equipment for automated sampling, conditioning or analyzing of emissions from a given source and the recording of data related to those emissions.
- Chemical mill
-
any mill in the pulp and paper sector that operates a recovery boiler or a lime kiln.
- Dissolving tank
-
equipment that collects the smelt from the recovery boiler and dilutes it, usually with water or weak white liquor.
- Lime kiln
-
combustion equipment used to transform calcium carbonate (CaCO
3) into lime (CaO).
- Mechanical mill
-
any mill in the pulp and paper sector that is not a chemical mill.
- Recovery boiler
-
boiler whose primary fuel is spent pulping liquor and is used to recover the chemical components from the combustion of spent pulping liquor.
- Operator
-
the operator of a pulp and paper mill is an authorized official who:
- in respect of a corporation, is an officer of the corporation who is authorized to act on its behalf;
- in respect of any other person, is that person or a person authorized to act on behalf of that person; and
- in respect of any other entity, is a person authorized to act on its behalf.
- Stationary source of combustion
-
any stationary combustion equipment with a nominal heat capacity greater than 10.5 gigajoules per hour (GJ/h) that operated more than 500 hours in the year where compliance was assessed.
- Thermal oxidizer
-
device used to destroy liquid, solid or gaseous matter through combustion, without recovering the energy produced.
- Total particulate matter (TPM)
- airborne particulate matter with an upper size limit of approximately 100 micrometre (µm) in aerodynamic equivalent diameter. Only the primary (filterable) portion is considered in this Code of Practice.
