Archived: Canadian Tropical Cyclone Season Summary for 1993

Hurricane Emily (August 22 to September 6, 1993)
Emily advanced from a tropical depression on August 22, 1993, into a tropical storm on the 25th. Emily was a long-lived storm. During its life time, it reached hurricane status on two occasions. At one point, Emily actually became a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Emily also attained maximum wind speeds of 185 kilometres per hour (100 knots).
Emily looked as though it was going to go inland over North Carolina but fortunately a high pressure over the United States curved the hurricane back out to sea. North Carolina did, however, suffer damage from storm surge and flooding amounting to $35 million.
Hurricane Floyd (September 7 to September 13, 1993)
Floyd originated as a tropical depression on September 7, 1993, however it was updated to a tropical storm on the same day. This storm very briefly hit hurricane strength off Labrador late on the 9th and during the day on the 10th. Floyd achieved a maximum wind speed of 129 kilometres per hour (70 knots). However, by late on the 10th, Floyd had been reduced from a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale to an extratropical cyclone. Floyd continued as an extratropical storm all the way to the European continent.
Hurricane Harvey (September 18 to September 21, 1993)
Harvey began as a tropical depression on September 18, 1993. Harvey reached tropical storm strength on the 20th and then briefly became a hurricane late that same day. This short-lived and weak hurricane formed well out into the central Atlantic and reached Category 1 hurricane strength temporarily. Harvey did reach maximum wind speeds of 120 kilometres per hour (65 knots), but was absorbed by a cold frontal band by September 21.
Harvey remained at sea and had no direct impact on Canada.
