Environmental occurrences notification agreements – renewal

Current status: Open

Opened on October 18, 2025 and will close to new input on December 17, 2025.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is seeking feedback on the proposed renewed notification agreements between Canada and Alberta, Canada and British Columbia, Canada and Manitoba, Canada and Ontario, Canada and Saskatchewan, and Canada and Yukon.

The purpose of these notification agreements is to establish a streamlined notification system and reduce duplication of effort for persons required to notify federal and provincial/territorial governments of an environmental emergency or environmental occurrence, such as an oil or chemical release. Under these notification agreements, 24-hour authorities operating for the provinces and territories receive emergency or occurrence notifications and transfer this information to Environment and Climate Change Canada, which is essential for timely and effective oversight of the response, as may be warranted.

The environmental occurrences notification agreements have a maximum term of 5 years, after which they must be renewed. The current Notification Agreements expire March 24, 2026.

As of Saturday, October 18, 2025, the proposed renewed notification agreements are available for a 60-day public consultation. The Notice with respect to the availability of environmental occurrences notification agreements was published in Canada Gazette, Part 1.

Interested persons requiring copies of the proposed agreements may request them by contacting the Environmental Emergencies Division, Environment and Climate Change Canada via email at UrgencesEnvironnementales-EnvironmentalEmergencies@ec.gc.ca.
