Implementing Bill S-5, Strengthening Environmental Protection for a Healthier Canada Act
Bill S-5, Strengthening Environmental Protection for a Healthier Canada Act received Royal Assent on June 13, 2023. Bill S-5 modernizes the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA) by recognizing a right to a healthy environment, as provided under the Act, and strengthening Canada’s chemicals management regime.
The Government of Canada is working to implement the modernized Act. The two main implementation initiatives involve developing:
- an implementation framework on the right to a healthy environment under CEPA
- a plan of chemicals management priorities
There will be opportunities for public input and participation in these initiatives. Please check regularly for updates on how to get involved and for new information that will be posted over the upcoming months, including instructions for providing feedback.
