Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)

Note that international trade in wild specimens of Appendix I species for commercial purposes is prohibited. However, under certain conditions, specimens produced by captive breeding operations registered by CITES can be traded for commercial purposes.

Applications for registration of a captive breeding operation will be approved only if sufficient details are provided.

Registration is for captive breeding operations producing animals listed in Appendix I of CITES for commercial purposes.

• All applicable sections must be filled out. Incomplete application forms will not be accepted. Additional information or documents may be requested from the applicant in order to process the application. The applicant must sign the application form.
• If the application is approved, confirmation of registration of the captive breeding operation will be sent by mail to the applicant.

1. Name and address of captive breeding operation

3. Breeding stock

Identify all the males and females that make up the parental breeding stock.

4. Current stock

Identify the progeny and other specimens held in addition to the parental breeding stock identified in section 3.

5. Percentage of mortality

Provide information for a minimum of the last five years or since the establishment of the operation.

6. Reproduction

Provide documentation showing that each of the species were produced to the second generation (F2) in the captive breeding operation.
If the establishment only produced first generation specimens for the species, provide documentation showing that the breeding methods used are the same or similar to those that have resulted in second generation offspring elsewhere.

7. Annual production

Specify the annual production during the last 5 years (if possible), the current production, and the expected production for the next 3 years.

8. Needs

Indicate the possibility of future need to increase the number of breeding stock specimens with
specimens bred in captivity or from the wild.

9. Type of product exported

Indicate the numbers or the quantities exported for each

10. Marking

Describe the methods used for marking (bands, tags, tattoos, etc.) used for the breeding stock, the offspring, and the specimens to be exported (skins, meat, live animals, etc.)

11. Inspection

Describe (if they exist) the inspection procedures currently implemented by the Province or Territory.

12. Facilities

Describe the facilities used to house the current and future stock as well as the security measures in place to prevent escape or theft of animals. Provide information on the number and size of enclosures used for reproduction and breeding, the facilities used to incubate eggs , the production or provision of food, the availability of veterinary services, and the maintenance of data. 13. Conservation

Describe (if any) the strategies or activities of the operation that contribute to improved
conservation of wild populations of the species.

14. Human care

Specify how the operation is carried out at all stages in a humane (noncruel) manner.
