This initiative will accelerate the expansion of Guardians programs by addressing Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation's concern about dwindling salmon numbers returning to traditional salmon spawning creeks and rivers, to aid in understanding what changes may be happening on the land and water that may be contributing to low salmon numbers, and by training Guardians to monitor the health of local creeks and rivers. The initiative plans to train two community members to become Land Guardians to collect water samples, take water field and stream/river flow measurements and to collect valuable scientific data. Elders will also teach the Guardians where salmon traditionally spawn, how and when to respectfully monitor the water, and provide Indigenous Knowledge on what other factors may be disrupting salmon runs and causing low numbers of fish to return. In addition, the community is also concerned with the contamination of water within their Traditional Territory, which will also be addressed by the water samples taken by the Guardians. Finally, the initiative will engage youth in monitoring the health of land and water by engaging in meaningful work and connecting with cultural values.  The activities will take place in Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation in the Yukon.

This initiative will implement a full-time Guardians program serving the six Syilx communities that are part of the Okanagan Nation Alliance. The initiative will focus primarily on the collection of data related to wildlife, ecosystems and cultural and ceremonial sites. This information will be reported to the Chief's Executive Council and the Syilx Natural Resource Committee to inform decision making and directives for stewardship on the land.
