Technical frameworks

The New Substances program developed technical frameworks to support notifiers in identifying the information needed for the notification of a new living organism under the New Substances Notification Regulations (Organisms).

This document provides guidance on the required information for taxonomically identifying the micro-organisms. The framework is intended to help notifiers with the choice of methodology and the analysis of scientific data required for adequate microbial identification.

This document outlines the steps used by Environment and Climate Change Canada and Health Canada to conduct science-based risk assessments of micro-organisms. The framework ensures that micro-organisms undergo a rigorous and consistent analysis to determine whether or not they are toxic, as defined under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. It presents the concepts considered when conducting this assessment based on available information on hazard and exposure for micro-organisms.
