Conditions for the Manufacture or Import of Substances New to Canada that are Suspected of Being Toxic

Notice is hereby given, pursuant to subsection 29(5) of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, that the Minister of the Environment has imposed, pursuant to subsection 29(1) of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, conditions on the import for substances suspected of being "toxic", as defined under section 11 of the Act.

1-chloro-tetradecane, Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number 2425-54-9. This substance can be imported by the notifier only for use as a synthetic reaction intermediate. In addition, its sale and distribution is permitted only to the persons who can ensure that the quantity of the substance released in aqueous effluents discharged to receiving waters does not exceed 2 mg/L and 2 g/day.

1-chloro-octane, Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number 111-85-3. This substance can be imported by the notifier subject to the condition that the notifier notifies the Department of the Environment of any import or planned import to distribute to a person a quantity of the substance in excess of 10 000 kg/yr, and that such notification include the name and location of the individual.
