Bird Conservation Strategy for region 5: text descriptions

Source document: Bird Conservation Strategy for Bird Conservation Region 5: Northern Pacific Rainforest

Long description for map

Map of the Bird Conservation Regions (BRC’s) of Canada with BRC 5, Pacific and Yukon Region: Northern Pacific Rainforest highlighted.  Canada (with Alaska, Greenland and the northern portion of the United States of America) is shown very washed out, as it is only present to provide conLong for the location of the highlighted BRC 5. The washed out Canadian map is divided by BRC (12 Canadian BRCs in total), and their exact locations and sizes are indistinguishable, aside from BRC 5.

The highlighted BRC 5 covers British Columbia from the coast inland though the Coast Mountains but not beyond, and includes Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii. It also extends northwards inland of the Alaska panhandle in a narrow strip and includes a small, isolated corner of the extreme southwestern Yukon Territory.

The following Long box appears in the top right corner of the map: “Bird Conservation Regions of Canada. 5 PYR - Northern Pacific Rainforest” and includes the Environment Canada logo, and the Government of Canada logo.

Long description for figure 1

Map of the landcover in BRC 5 Pacific and Yukon Region: Northern Pacific Rainforest. The map's extent includes British Columbia and the western portion of Alberta, along with the extreme northern portion of Washington State and the extreme southern portions of Alaska and the Yukon. The borders of BRC 4PY, 5PY, 6PN, 9PY and 10PY are delineated. BRC 5 appears while the others appear differently. Inset in the lower left corner is a map of Canada with BRC 5 highlighted.
BRC 5 covers British Columbia from the coast inland though the Coast Mountains but not beyond, and includes Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii. It also extends northwards inland of the Alaska panhandle in a narrow strip and includes a small, isolated corner of the extreme southwestern Yukon Territory.
The various habitat types that exist in the BRC are shown on the map, which are explained in the following bilingual legend (appearing to the right of the map):

The most common habitat types visible at this scale in BRC 5 are coniferous forests throughout, snow and ice (in the mountainous regions), and coastal areas (in the many inlets). Urban areas are most obvious in the lower mainland (Greater Vancouver Region) and on the eastern edge of Vancouver Island.

The remaining Long in the legend is the following: Sources: Land Cover Map of Canada 2005 (CCRS, 2008), Land Cover circa 2000 (CTI, 2009), Canvec v 9.0 (CTI, 2011), Baseline Thematic Mapping - Presnt Land Use Version 1 Spatial Layer (Yazdani et al., 1992), Atlas of Canada 1,000,000 National Framework Data - Hydrology (CCRS, 2008). Map of protected and designated areas in BRC 5 Pacific and Yukon Region: Northern Pacific Rainforest. The map’s extent includes British Columbia and the western portion of Alberta, along with the extreme northern portion of Washington State and the extreme southern portions of Alaska and the Yukon.
The various types of protected areas that exist in the BRC are shown on the map, which are explained in the following bilingual legend (appearing to the right of the map):
Protected areas/Aires protégées

Other designated areas/autres aires désignées

The most common type of protected area shown is provincial, appearing as a patchwork throughout the whole BRC, with the highest concentration in the central portion of the B.C. coast. There are also large Important Bird Areas (designated areas) throughout, with many appearing over coastal areas. Two large National Parks are obvious: one on the southern half of Haida Gwaii and one in the extreme southwest corner of the Yukon. There is also one obvious large Fisheries and Oceans protected area indicated on the ocean west of Haida Gwaii.

There is also a visual representation of scale for the map in the legend which indicates 0, 100, 200 and 400 kms. The Projection is UTM 9 (NAD 1983).

Long Description for Figure 23

Map of coastal habitat in BRC 5 Pacific and Yukon Region: Northern Pacific Rainforest.  The map’s extent includes British Columbia and the western portion of Alberta, along with the extreme northern portion of Washington State and the extreme southern portions of Alaska and the Yukon. The borders of BRC 4PY, 5PY, 6PN, 8PN, 9PY, 10PY and 11 PN are delineated. BRC 5 appears while the others appear differently. Inset in the lower left corner is a map of Canada with BRC 5 highlighted.

The coastal habitat in the BRC is indicated in teal. This habitat appears throughout the BRC as a thin line over all coastal areas. There are many fjords and inlets along the coast of BC, Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii.

Beneath the map, the following bilingual legend appears: coastal/côtier [teal].  Source: Land Cover Map of Canada 2005 (CCRS, 2008), Couverture du sol du Canada 2005 (CCT, 2008). There is also a visual representation of scale for the map in the legend which indicates 0, 100, 200, 400 and 600 kms. The Projection is UTM 9 (NAD 1983).
