The calculator focusses on releases to air and uses default emission factors. It can be adapted to use site-specific emission factors if they are available. If you want to use a site-specific emission factor, enter it in the emission factor column, but be sure to convert the units correctly. 

The spreadsheet calculators use emission factors based on uncontrolled emission sources. If you use an emission control device and the default emission factor is uncontrolled, use this formula to adjust the spreadsheet calculation:

Controlled emissions = uncontrolled emission x ((100 - control efficiency)/100)

Since NPRI reporting thresholds are for the facility as a whole, you may need to combine the air releases you calculate with releases from other sources at your facility.

Suggested estimation methodology: emission factor

The general equation for estimation using an emissions factor is:

E = A x EF

where:

  • E = emissions
  • A = activity rate
  • EF = emission factor

The total emissions for each of total particulate matter (TPM), particulate matter less than or equal to 10 micrometers (µm) (PM10) and particulate matter less than or equal to 2.5 µm (PM2.5) are calculated by summing all individual emissions calculated for each substance from each process.

Input data

A = throughput processed (tonnes/year)

Throughput is measured either as material processed or as raw material processed. The tables below show the type of throughput used for the calculation based on the process used to crush the stone and whether it is controlled or not.

Note: "Uncontrolled" refers to processing of material with a moisture content below 1.5%. When the moisture content of the processed material is <1.5 %, complete the uncontrolled process throughput section of the input information tab.

Note: "Controlled" refers to the processing of material, either naturally wet with a moisture content above 1.5% or moistened to 1.5% and above with wet suppression techniques.
