Environment and Climate Change Canada Science Strategy 2024 to 2029: Forward-looking science for the environmental challenges of today and the future

Science is at the center of Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) work. It is about problem-solving. The ECCC Science Strategy 2024-2029 sets out an ambitious framework to guide departmental science activities and priorities.

The triple crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are complex and interconnected. Addressing these threats requires the mobilization of cutting-edge science and collaboration across the Canadian innovation system.

A new strategy to reflect the current context

The Strategy tells ECCC’s science story. It describes who we are, what we do, and how we achieve our mandate as a science-based, federal organization in a rapidly evolving context. The Strategy also provides the framework and direction for scientific activities and advice over the next five years.

This Strategy aligns our work with federal priorities by identifying the key scientific activities needed to inform policies, regulations, and services to protect Canadians and their environment.

An ambitious guide for departmental science and collaboration

The Strategy includes a new vision for ECCC science, alongside renewed science values, and forward-looking science directions. It promotes enhanced scientific collaboration and communication across the Government of Canada and beyond to mobilize scientific insights toward meaningful action. It champions working with other experts and leaders including provinces, territories, Indigenous communities, research institutions, and international forums.

This plan represents a strong and adaptable commitment to the role of ECCC science in achieving a greener, more sustainable future.
