Water quantity: overview
Canada is fortunate. It has only 0.5% of the world's population, but its landmass contains approximately 7% of the world's renewable water supply.
That being said, most of Canada's population resides in the south while much of the water flows north. In addition, water quantity is affected by temperatures that increase evaporation, by development, by damming and by removing it from its source. It is not necessarily in the right place at the right time.
Information about water quantity such as flows, levels, and sediment transport is necessary to make decisions about sustainable use and for resolving conflicts. This section provides information on the quantity of water in Canada, as well as on Environment Canada’s role in measuring and monitoring water flows and levels.
