Government of Canada Investments Support Arts, Culture and Greater Sudbury’s Creative Economy

Backgrounder

The Government of Canada funding announced today is provided through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150) and Canada 150 Fund which are part of the Government of Canada’s coordinated approach to mark the anniversary of Confederation. The CIP 150 program is designed to leave a lasting legacy in communities across the country by supporting improvements to community infrastructure that provide community and cultural benefits for the public. The Canada 150 Fund was created in April 2015 and has a total budget of $200 million.

Theatre Cambrian
$50,000

To support the development and growth of Greater Sudbury’s creative economy, a FedNor investment of $50,000 will enable Theatre Cambrian to upgrade and modernize its cultural centre. This targeted investment will help the organization form key partnerships with cultural groups by expanding its product and services, while ensuring the facility is safe, energy efficient and fully accessible. The funding will be used to complete fire safety and suppression upgrades, install a new boiler system as well as energy efficient lighting and windows. The project will also support the installation of a professional stage and backdrop, and accessibility features such as ramps and automated doors.

Sudbury Downtown Independent Cinema Co-operative
$50,000

A Government of Canada investment of $50,000, provided through CIP 150, will enable the Sudbury Downtown Independent Cinema Co-operative to establish a fully digital cinema in Sudbury’s downtown core. The FedNor funding will be used to transform the gymnasium at the former St. Louis De Gonzague School into a fully digital cinema dedicated to screening festival-quality independent films from around the world. Specifically, this investment will allow the organization to purchase and install state-of-the-art film and sound equipment as well as new seating for the facility.

Laurentian University
$37,500

In celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation, the investment of $37,500, through the Canada 150 Fund, will enable Laurentian University to coordinate and host the Great Canadian Experience - Indigeneity Celebration. As part of the project, 1500 grade-six students from across Greater Sudbury will be invited to participate in workshops that will serve as a celebration and education about First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures. Offered in both official languages, the workshops will also create a better understanding of Canada's current and historic relationship with Indigenous peoples.
