FedNor investment helps local manufacturers adopt new technologies and expand to meet rising demand

December 10, 2020 – Sudbury, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario – FedNor

Advanced manufacturing is a cornerstone of Canada’s economy, producing important goods for the domestic and international markets while supporting well-paying jobs for Canadians across the country. As technology transforms manufacturing, Canadian companies are innovating and modernizing their processes to stay on the cutting edge. This involves transforming operations, adopting advanced automated equipment, investing in research and maintaining a highly skilled workforce.

Paul Lefebvre, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, and Marc G. Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, today announced a Government of Canada investment of $663,945 in support of two projects to help strengthen and grow Greater Sudbury’s manufacturing sector. Once complete, these strategic initiatives are expected to create more than 25 local jobs. The funding is provided through FedNor’s Regional Economic Growth through Innovation Program

First, an investment of $463,587 will enable Carriere Industrial Supply Ltd. to purchase and install specialized equipment and robotics technology. This includes four robotic cells designed to increase automation and support the company in its efforts to produce and commercialize new products. The funding will also support facility upgrades to improve product quality and reduce environmental impacts.

The remaining $200,358 will enable City Welding Sudbury (2015) Limited to acquire innovative production and fabrication equipment to improve efficiencies and product quality, while reducing emissions. Specifically, the funding will be used to complete facility upgrades and purchase specialized ventilation equipment and modular fitting tables.

COVID-19 has highlighted the importance of innovation in manufacturing. With the support of the Government of Canada, industries are reassessing their models and adapting their operations to better serve clients, while continuing to find opportunities for development and growth. As we safely reopen Canada’s economy, the government will continue supporting manufacturers in developing new technologies and creating highly skilled jobs for Canadians.
