The Government of Canada’s support will help build cultural infrastructure and create economic development opportunities
December 16, 2022 – North Bay, ON – Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario – FedNor
Targeted investments by FedNor in Northern Ontario municipalities, First Nations communities, and organizations are helping to create jobs, growth, and build more resilient communities in the region. These initiatives help to support diverse economic development and strong, independent communities that are safe and accessible to all Canadians.
Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced FedNor investments totalling $1,356,398 for five projects located in municipalities and Indigenous communities in Northeastern Ontario.
The FedNor funding is being provided through the Northern Ontario Development Program (NODP) and its Community Investment Initiative for Northern Ontario (CIINO), as well as the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF). The projects supported will help resilient communities grow, revitalize cultural spaces, and strengthen the economy while creating opportunities for continued future growth. This will be accomplished by redesigning and upgrading outdoor spaces, investing in sustainable agri-food technology, and by enabling the development and execution of strategic economic planning initiatives. This investment is expected to create close to 50 full-time jobs.
For the full list of projects, please see backgrounder.
“Today’s FedNor investment in Indigenous initiatives supports vibrant local culture and strong, self-reliant communities in the Nipissing–Timiskaming area. By funding these five projects, FedNor is helping to create close to 50 full-time jobs and future economic opportunities while fostering culturally-rich spaces to be shared by residents and tourists alike.”
- The Honourable Anthony Rota, Member of Parliament for Nipissing–Timiskaming
“FedNor’s investment of over $1.3 million announced today will help advance some great Indigenous-led projects happening in our region, including new shared cultural spaces, supporting agri-food independence, and driving economic development. Partnerships on the projects and investments announced today are essential to building a healthy and inclusive region.”
- The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor
“FedNor’s support will help us protect our community by becoming more self-reliant on locally-produced food. Not only will the new greenhouse provide healthy food, but it will create opportunities for new agri-food ventures while also leaving open expansion and the chance to assist other communities in the future.”
- Scott McLeod, Chief of Nipissing First Nation
The Northern Ontario Development Program (NODP) supports communities' efforts to plan and mobilize their resources, enhance business growth, and exploit new opportunities for economic development and diversification.
- The Community Investment Initiative for Northern Ontario (CIINO) helps small communities or First Nations hire a qualified individual to support local economic development. This economic development professional works to foster opportunities and partnerships in the region and helps implement strategies that seek to strengthen the community and create jobs.
The now-closed Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF) is aimed at helping communities across Canada build and improve community infrastructure projects so they can rebound from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
