FedNor invests over $4.5 million to support tourism projects across Northern Ontario
Backgrounder
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada’s tourism sector was generating $102 billion in annual economic activity, 1.8 million jobs and accounted for over two percent of GDP, making it an essential contributor to the Canadian economy. That is why the Government of Canada is stepping up efforts to ensure tourism businesses and organizations, as well as municipalities and Indigenous communities dependent on the sector, are supported and ready to welcome back visitors.
The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced FedNor investments totalling $4,571,644 for 27 tourism projects across Northern Ontario, creating and maintaining over 140 jobs. The investments are provided through FedNor’s Tourism Relief Fund (TRF), as well as through the Northern Ontario Development Program (NODP) and the Economic Development Initiative (EDI) (identified below)

Lac Seul First Nation is receiving a non-repayable investment of $500,000 to support the creation of a Tourism Asset Development Plan and modernization of four tourism infrastructure sites.

Rod & Reel Resort is receiving a repayable investment of $500,000 to replace a small, older cabin with a new year-round, lakefront cabin.

Georgian Bay Cruise Company is receiving a non-repayable investment of $450,000 to modernize the propulsion system on the Chief Commanda II ship.

The Kenora Chiefs Advisory is receiving a non-repayable investment of $317,889 to upgrade and enhance an existing building at its Tourism Cultural and Recreational Centre.

Tourism North Bay is receiving a non-repayable investment of $165,000 to undertake a joint tourism destination development and marketing project.

The Township of Assiginack is receiving a non-repayable investment of $126,000 in order to complete the engineering and design portion of the Assiginack Multipurpose Arts and Events Centre construction project.

Lac Seul Resort is receiving a non-repayable investment of $100,000 to winterize four cabins and upgrade docking systems.

The Thunder Valley Development Corporation is receiving a non-repayable investment of $100,000 to install fencing and add storage capacity required to operate the Thunder City Speedway multi-use race track.

Clark’s Northern Lights Outpost is receiving a non-repayable investment of $89,059 to construct a cabin, multi-use deck, and a floating dock.
The Waterfront Regeneration Trust Corporation

The Waterfront Regeneration Trust Corporation is receiving a non-repayable investment of $77,000 to identify and map the routes of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, as well as to procure and deliver way-finding signage to 22 municipalities and First Nations communities for installation along 600 kilometers of the route between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.

The Township of Pickle Lake is receiving a non-repayable investment of $75,569 to upgrade the access road and improve the parking lot for the downtown waterfront.

The Township of Black River-Matheson is receiving a non-repayable investment of $675,000 to complete design and engineering work necessary for improvements to the downtown core.
Wahgoshig First Nation

Wahgoshig First Nation is receiving a non-repayable investment of $344,700 to purchase equipment and create a tourism hub, including an outdoor trail network, a gazebo, two teepees, and a Shaputuan (longhouse), as well as to complete a Tourism Opportunity Analysis & Assessment Study.

Le Centre culturel ARTEM is receiving a non-repayable investment of $78,500 to relaunch the Temiskaming Christmas Village.
