House Standing Committee on Finance (February 13, 2024)
ANNEX F: The Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ position on housing
FCAC Commissioner Judith Robertson and Deputy Commissioner, Supervision and Enforcement Frank Lofranco will appear before the House Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) on Tuesday February 13, 2023 as part of the Committee’s study of housing affordability.
Appearing the same day will be representatives from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), which is the national voice of governments from more than 2000 municipalities of all sizes from across Canada, representing 92% of Canadians.
A key element of FCM advocacy related to housing is for federal funding to renew the stock of subsidized housing in Canada. The FCM has a dedicated home page for its position and announcements related to housing (Housing | Federation of Canadian Municipalities (fcm.ca), a short summary of which appears below:
- In order to meet the growing demand for housing, new units need to be built but also new municipal infrastructure to support new housing.
- Municipalities don’t have the tax base to build new infrastructure on their own – support from other levels of government is required.
- The FCM is calling on the federal government to bring together various levels of government to create a new Municipal Growth Framework, and for new federal investments in municipal infrastructure to be added to the 2024 federal budget.
