The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will participate in a meeting of representatives of the Lima Group and the International Contact Group on June 3, 2019, in New York City, New York.

“Canada, the Lima Group and the International Contact Group are deeply concerned with the worsening crisis in Venezuela, where people continue to suffer under severe political repression and lack of access to food, medicine and basic necessities of life. The people of Venezuela have demanded the end of the Maduro dictatorship, and we are determined to support them.”

• The Lima Group was established on August 8, 2017, to coordinate efforts and bring international pressure on the illegitimate Maduro dictatorship in Venezuela. It includes the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Saint Lucia.

• The International Contact Group on Venezuela was established on January 26, 2019, and includes representation from Costa Rica, Ecuador, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Uruguay.

• More than 3 million Venezuelans have been forced to flee their homes since 2015 in search of food, health care and other basic services.
