Minister Ng promotes Canada’s mining industry at virtual Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada 2021 Convention

The Government of Canada is committed to working with the mining industry to encourage innovation and generate growth while supporting environmental standards and responsible business conduct.

The Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade, successfully concluded her participation in the virtual Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) 2021 Convention, which was live from March 8 to March 11, during which she highlighted Canada’s leadership in the fields of innovation, sustainable mining and clean technologies.

The virtual Canada Pavilion at PDAC 2021 showcased the Government of Canada’s commitment to innovation in the mining sector. A Trade Commissioner Service booth highlighted funding and support programs and its network of trade commissioners in more than 160 cities worldwide that are available to Canadian companies operating in international markets.

On March 9, Minister Ng delivered opening remarks during the Canada Hour virtual session, discussed Canada’s leadership role in the global shift to a green economy and joined the Canada-Africa Chamber of Business for its 22nd Annual Mining Breakfast and Seminar.

In the days following PDAC, Minister Ng continued to participate in activities associated with the mining sector. On March 15, Minister Ng attended a round table on the future of mining where she met with representatives of numerous groups, including the Mining Association of Canada (MAC), IAMGOLD, MSTA Canada, the Optimize Group, Teck Resources, PDAC, PearTree Canada, Women Who Rock, Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business and Points Athabasca Contracting. The round table focused on the future of mining as well as the Canadian mining industry’s efforts to increase diversity and inclusion within the sector and to enhance responsible business practices, while promoting Canadian innovative technologies. Minister Ng was joined by Sara Wilshaw, Canada’s Chief Trade Commissioner.

Later in the day, Minister Ng delivered remarks at the end-of-day closing of the Toronto Stock Exchange, highlighting the importance of Canada’s critical minerals in building a sustainable recovery and a cleaner, more innovative economy.

Minister Ng also participated in a series of bilateral meetings, including with Juan Carlos Jobet, Chile’s Minister of Mining and Energy, Tatiana Clouthier Carrillo, Mexico’s Secretary of Economy, and Arifin Tasrif, Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. Minister Ng spoke on a range of issues and reiterated Canada’s competitive advantage in the mining and natural resources sector in terms of its expertise, innovative talent and its adherence to the highest standards of environmental protection and responsible business practices.
