Parliamentary Secretary Sidhu to travel to Jamaica

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced today that Maninder Sidhu, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, will travel to Jamaica from November 9 to 11, 2022.

During his visit, Parliamentary Secretary Sidhu will engage with government officials, including Foreign Minister of Jamaica Kamina Johnson Smith, civil society representatives and business leaders to discuss regional priorities, including the situation in Haiti, democracy and good governance, gender equality, as well as recovery and growth in a post-COVID-19 world.

Parliamentary Secretary Sidhu will also engage with Canada Fund for Local Initiatives recipients and beneficiaries, who work on projects supporting women farmers, women entrepreneurs, the LGBTQ2+ community and survivors of gender-based violence.

  • Canada is a key partner for Jamaica in its efforts to fight crime and violence. Our countries collaborate on a number of initiatives in defence and security under Canada’s Anti-Crime Capacity Building Program.

  • Following the 2017 hurricane season that devastated the Caribbean, Canada announced the $100 million Pledge for Caribbean Reconstruction and Economic and Climate Resilience to support reconstruction and climate resilience in Jamaica and the region. At the CARICOM Intersessional Meeting in February 2020, Canada announced an additional, $61.5 million in new commitments for resilience, technical assistance and education exchanges for the Caribbean.
