The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced the appointment of Laird Hindle as Ambassador to the Republic of Estonia.

“With this first appointment, we continue to advance Canada’s strategic diplomatic presence in the Baltic states. Since Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine, the world has experienced a profound geopolitical shift with political, economic, security and environmental impacts. To counteract Russia’s sustained aggression and influence, it is imperative that we reinforce Canada’s standing through diplomatic engagement on the ground working side by side with our friends and allies.”

• In 2022, Canada announced that it would establish an embassy in Estonia with a resident ambassador.

• Bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Estonia totalled $187 million in 2022. In the same year, Canadian merchandise exports to Estonia amounted to $28.7 million. Canadian merchandise imports from Estonia reached $158.3 million in 2022.

• In 2022, Canadian direct investment in Estonia was valued at $25 million. That same year, foreign direct investment from Estonia in Canada was valued at $5 million.
