Paul Chiang

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Represents the riding of Markham—Unionville

Paul Chiang was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Markham—Unionville in 2021. He previously served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion (Diversity and Inclusion).

Prior to entering politics, Mr. Chiang worked with the York Regional Police, where he served with distinction for 28 years, most recently as a sergeant with the Diversity and Cultural Resources Unit. A champion for diversity and inclusion, he dedicated his career to building bridges between local residents, communities, and police services.

Born in Karachi, Pakistan, from Chinese parents, Mr. Chiang immigrated to Canada in 1976. An active member of his community, he has committed to making it a safe and welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds and ages, and has worked to help improve access to community services. He has volunteered with a variety of organizations, including Catholic Community Services of York Region, the Canadian Cancer Society, and the Missionaries of the Poor in Kingston, Jamaica. In recognition of his services to the community, Mr. Chiang received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 and the Police Exemplary Service Medal in 2013.

Mr. Chiang speaks English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hubei, Hakka, Urdu, Hindi, and Punjabi. He and his wife, Monica, have called York Region home for over 32 years. They are the proud parents of three adult children and have six grandchildren.
