The Honourable Gary Anandasangaree

Minister of Public Safety

Represents the riding of Scarborough—Guildwood—Rouge Park

The Honourable Gary Anandasangaree is Canada’s Minister of Public Safety. Elected to Parliament in 2015 in the riding of Scarborough—Rouge Park, Minister Anandasangaree was re-elected in 2019, 2021 and 2025.

He was first appointed to Cabinet as the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and has also served as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. In May of 2025, he was named Minister of Public Safety.

Minister Anandasangaree came to Canada as a refugee with his mother in 1983. Grateful for the opportunities this country has provided him and his family, he has used his life’s experience to advocate for the rights of refugees in Canada. Prior to entering politics, Minister Anandasangaree was an internationally recognized human rights lawyer, regularly representing Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada at the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Minister Anandasangaree earned his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2006. He then went on to manage his own law firm in Scarborough and became a well-known community leader and activist.

His extensive community involvement includes roles as Chair of the Canadian Tamil Youth Development Centre, President of the Canadian Tamils’ Chamber of Commerce, Board Member of the Youth Challenge Fund, Member of the Toronto Police Chief’s Advisory Council, and Member of the United Way Newcomers Grant Program.

In honour of his devotion to community service and local advocacy, Minister Anandasangaree was awarded both the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

He also has a special connection to Ireland, having begun his primary education at Synge Street Christian Brothers School in Dublin prior to arriving in Canada.

Minister Anandasangaree is married and has two daughters.
