Message from the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health - National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week (April 17-23, 2016)

Statement

Did you know that one organ and tissue donor alone can save up to eight lives and benefit more than 75 people? The actions of one can have an enormous impact on so many others.

During this National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, I would like to remind all Canadians of the critical need for organ and tissue donations. Progress has been made over the past decade, with the number of deceased organ donors increasing by 44%. However, more than 4,500 Canadians are still waiting for an organ transplant today.

We can all help. Registering to become a donor has never been easier. If you are interested or just want to learn more, talk to your doctor or visit the Government of Canada’s Organ and Tissue Donation web page. It contains helpful information and an interactive map to guide you to the appropriate contact in the province or territory where you live.

It only takes a few minutes to learn more about organ donation and take the important step of registering your decision. I also urge you to discuss your choice with family and friends. It is important that they know your wishes and that you know theirs.

The Government of Canada is working hard to improve the organ and tissue donation and transplantation system in Canada. Together with the provincial and territorial governments, we have invested over $64 million since 2008 to support the Canadian Blood Services’ efforts to improve the organ and tissue donation and transplantation system. This funding supports their vital work in increasing Canadians’ access to life-saving and life-enhancing organs and tissues.

Additionally, the federal government has invested more than $83 million over two years in research related to transplantation to not only help increase donations but also to improve the survival rates and quality of life for Canadians who receive transplants.

I applaud all who bring needed attention to this important issue and extend my deepest gratitude to Canadian organ donors and their families and to all those who have registered to become donors.

Anyone can be a potential donor. Please consider joining this effort and share the gift of life.

The Honourable Jane Philpott, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Health
