Message from the Minister of Health - Aboriginal Nurses Day
News Release
May 9, 2016 - Ottawa, ON - Health Canada
In addition to marking the beginning of National Nursing Week, today is Aboriginal Nurses’ Day – a wonderful opportunity to recognize Indigenous nurses who demonstrate tremendous commitment and dedication to their profession and to the First Nations and Inuit communities in which they work.
Nurses play an essential role in our health care system, and I am proud to recognize the work of Aboriginal nurses across Canada. Often working in unique and challenging circumstances, Aboriginal nurses provide essential care, where they are sometimes the only frontline health providers for clients living in remote and isolated areas. They make critical contributions in many areas including hospitals, health centres, community centres, patients' homes, public health units, and universities. Within their communities, Indigenous nurses play an invaluable role conducting research, teaching courses, and promoting awareness of the importance of cultural competence in their profession.
Our Government recognizes that we need to work with all of our partners to improve the health and well-being of Canadians, and close the health outcomes gap that exists for First Nations and Inuit communities. Aboriginal nurses play a vital role in achieving this objective as we work towards improving the accessibility of high quality health services that are culturally sensitive and appropriate.
Aboriginal nurses also play a leadership role for those considering a path in the health care profession. Through their excellent work, Aboriginal nurses are setting an example of how we can work together to achieve better health as individuals, families and communities.
I invite everyone to join me in celebrating Aboriginal nurses, and thanking them for the positive difference they make in the lives of Canadians across the country.
The Honourable Jane Philpott, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Health
