Message from the Minister of Health - National Hospice Palliative Care Week - May 1st to May 7th, 2016

Statement

We are fortunate in Canada to have many talented and caring health professionals who work in palliative care.  This National Hospice Palliative Care Week, I would like to sincerely thank them along with the countless volunteers, for their dedication and commitment to this important work.

As a physician, I’ve witnessed the vital role palliative care plays in our health care system, providing much needed support to patients and their families at one of the most difficult times of their lives. Whether it is provided at home, in a hospice or medical institution, palliative care is critical to an effective health care system.

We know that access to high-quality care in our country remains a challenge. Depending on where you live, only 16 to 30 per cent of Canadians who require it, currently have access to, or receive palliative and end-of-life care services. This needs to change.

In my meetings and discussions with the provinces and territories, I know that we are all committed to supporting improvements in this area.  That is why the federal government has committed $3 billion over the next four years to deliver more and better home care services for Canadians, including those who need palliative care.

I would like to wish the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association much success this week in helping to raise awareness of and advance the need for quality hospice palliative care in communities across the country.

The Honourable Jane Philpott, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Health
