Message from the Minister of Health | National Nursing Week | May 9-15, 2016

Statement

May 12, 2016

National Nursing Week, celebrated from May 9 to 15, is an opportunity to recognize and honour nurses for their dedication to the health of Canadians and the contributions they make to our health care system.

I want to express my appreciation to Canada’s nurses, and the many roles they play, as health professionals, service providers, health promoters, and educators, to name of few. Improving health care requires strong partnerships, and our Government is committed to working closely with health care professionals and other stakeholders to strengthen our health system.

Our Government is also committed to closing the gaps in health outcomes that exist in Indigenous communities, and to working with all of our partners to do so. Nurses play a vital role in achieving this, and I would like to further express my appreciation for nurses who work tirelessly in First Nations and Inuit communities where they provide essential care and, at times, are the only frontline health providers for those living in remote and isolated areas.

I invite all Canadians to join me in celebrating the nursing profession, and to thank nurses for their dedication, and the key role they play in the provision of quality health care in Canada.

The Honourable Jane Philpott, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Health
