Minister of Health Statement on Vision Health Month
Statement
May is vision health month, a time when Canadians are encouraged to get their eyes checked and learn more about how to preserve their eyesight.
While ageing is the single greatest factor driving vision loss in Canada, anyone can suffer from vision loss at any age. There are many different factors and conditions that can impact vision. For example, injury and chronic diseases such as diabetes can negatively impact eyesight. Likewise, many Canadians now experience eye strain as a result of the time spent using computers, smartphones and tablets. The good news is that 75% of vision loss can be prevented or treated (CNIB).
In fact, there are many things that you and your family can do to protect and maintain your vision including the following:
- Wear UVA and UBV protectant sunglasses;
- Quit smoking;
- Reduce “screen time” (i.e., time spent watching TV, using computers and other electronic devices);
- Maintain a healthy diet including plenty of fruits and vegetables.
During this Vision Health Month, I would like to remind Canadians to have their eyes examined regularly and watch out for changes to their vision. Early detection of problems by your eye care professional will help you maintain good vision and prevent avoidable sight loss.
The Honourable Jane Philpott, P.C., M.P.
