Message from the Minister of Health - National Aboriginal Day - June 21, 2016

Statement

Today marks the 20th anniversary of National Aboriginal Day in Canada.  It is a day for all Canadians to celebrate the vibrant cultures, strong traditions, and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. Many Indigenous communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day for generations because of the significance of the summer solstice. So, in 1996, June 21st was chosen by Indigenous communities and the Government of Canada as National Aboriginal Day.

As the Minister of Health, I am proud to be celebrating Canada's indigenous communities. I am also proud that our government has made a strong commitment to forging a renewed Nation-to-Nation relationship with Indigenous peoples, based on respect.

My department works with First Nations and Inuit to provide quality healthcare, recognizing the important role that culture plays in the health and well-being of individuals and communities. We are committed to closing the health outcome gaps that exist for First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, and I firmly believe that by working together with Indigenous leaders, communities, families and youth, we can make a difference.

Today, there are many celebratory activities taking place across the country. I encourage all Canadians to take part, learn more about Indigenous history, and catch the spirit of National Aboriginal Day!
