Ministerial Statement - Healthy Me Week - June 6-12, 2016

Statement

As the summer approaches, I encourage you to take part in the 5th annual Healthy Me Week, held from June 6th to 12th.

Led by Companies Committed to Kids and supported by 18 partners, Healthy Me Week is a call to action encouraging Canadians of all ages to make small lifestyle choices like being more active and eating well-balanced meals in order to lead healthier, happier lives. Healthy Me Week is based on three core principles:

Get Up:
Take a step in the right direction by adding physical activity to your daily lifestyle. Physical activity doesn’t mean only sports – it can include activities like walking the dog, gardening, playing tag and even helping with household chores.
Fuel Up:
Make healthy food choices and feed your body well-balanced meals. You can do this by visiting a farmers' market and trying local vegetables, eating a variety of whole grains, as well as choosing fish and lean meats.
Own Up:
Set personal goals and be your own healthy living champ. Schedule physical activity into your calendar and it will help you stick to your plan!

Throughout my career as a doctor, I have seen first-hand the benefits that come from maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is essential to our vitality, well-being and quality of life. When Canadians are in good physical and mental health, they are more productive, and contribute more fully to our society while living healthier, happier lives.

Small, yet important actions such as taking the Healthy Me Week Action Plan Quiz, starting a Daily Planner, and downloading Tips to Get Active, can help you get on the right path.
