Message from the Minister of Health: National Hospice Palliative Care Week, May 7-13, 2017

Statements

Palliative care is a crucial part of our health care system, providing much-needed support to patients and their families at one of the most difficult times of their lives. Whether it is provided at home or in a hospice or medical institution, palliative care is vital to an effective health care system.

Canadians want to stay independent and receive care at home, including at the end of their lives. That is why, in the recent Budget, the Government of Canada committed $6 billion over 10 years to support better home care, including palliative care. We want to help those who would choose to spend their final days in a hospice or at home, surrounded by friends and family, rather than in a hospital.

During National Hospice Palliative Care Week, I invite you to join me in recognizing the compassionate health professionals and the many selfless volunteers who work in palliative care. We applaud them for their dedication and commitment to this important work.

I also want to thank the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association for its continued work in raising awareness of end-of-life care, while advocating for quality hospice palliative care in communities across the country. The Government of Canada has heard your message and we are committed to improving palliative care services for all Canadians.

The Honourable Jane Philpott, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Health
