Message from the Minister of Health - International Day of the Midwife
Statement
International Day of the Midwife is a time to recognize midwives for their crucial work in caring for women, babies and their families. This year’s theme — “Midwives leading the way with quality care” — reflects the key role midwives have from pregnancy to post-partum.
Midwives play an all-important part during a crucial period – pregnancy, labour, birth and after. They also serve as health counsellors and educators; helping mothers and families prepare for their new arrival. Whether practicing in the home, hospital or elsewhere, midwives are integral to our health care system.
Today, I invite all Canadians to join me in celebrating the importance of midwives and midwifery in Canada and around the world.
The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Health
