Statement from the Minister of Health on World Mental Health Day

Statement

October 10, 2025 | Ottawa, ON | Health Canada

Today, on World Mental Health Day and during Mental Illness Awareness Week is a time to pause, reflect, and speak openly about the reality of mental illness. No two experiences are the same, but everyone deserves compassion and care.

This year’s theme, “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies”, recognizes the impact emergencies can have on mental health. From climate change and global conflict, to mass casualty events and overdoses linked to the illegal toxic drug supply—these events can bring about feeling of stress, grief and helplessness. The mental health impacts of these events can be long lasting and are not the same for everyone, underscoring the importance of accessible and inclusive supports.

Improving access to mental health services and supports remains a priority for the Government of Canada. By funding the Canadian Emergency Response Psychosocial Support Network (CanEMERG), the Government, through the Public Health Agency of Canada, supported the development of mental health resources to help communities plan for and respond to emergencies. And with the growth of Integrated Youth Services hubs, more young people and families are getting help close to home.

Even though we have succeeded in opening the conversation on mental health, asking for help is not always easy, especially when in the height of crisis. The launch of 9-8-8: Suicide Crisis Helpline was an important step in making suicide prevention resources more readily available across Canada. Support is now only three digits away.

We must continue acknowledging the importance of mental health care, breaking down stigma, and working towards the care every person deserves.

Because when Canadians are feeling good, our country is stronger.

To anyone struggling with mental health challenges, you are not alone. Help is available – visit canada.ca/mental-health for a list of services and supports in your area.

The Honourable Marjorie Michel, P.C., M.P.
