Consultation: Proposal to amend the list of maximum residue limits for veterinary drugs in foods - Proposed MRL 2023-1

Opened on July 11, 2023 and will close to new input on September 24, 2023.
Health Canada is seeking comments on a proposal to amend the List of Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for Veterinary Drugs in Foods (the List).
Health Canada's Veterinary Drugs Directorate (VDD):
- ensures the safety of foods produced in Canada from food-producing animals treated with veterinary drugs
- approves veterinary drugs for sale in Canada by conducting scientific reviews
- sets standards such as MRLs in the tissues and food products from food-producing animals
- foods containing veterinary drug residues up to the established MRL levels are safe for human consumption
The directorate conducts public consultations before Health Canada makes these changes to the List:
- establishes new MRLs
- updates current MRLs
To meet Canada's international trade obligations, Health Canada also notifies the World Trade Organization of the consultation on the proposed MRLs.

What happens after the consultation
Following the consultation, Health Canada will:
- address any scientific or safety concerns before we complete the MRLs
- send a final notice to amend the list of MRLs on Canada.ca with the effective implementation date
