Inventory updates
The information that the Government of Canada has collected for many substances may no longer represent current commercial activity in Canada. The government recognizes that maintaining an up-to-date inventory of substances in commerce is critical to informing risk assessment and risk management programs and activities.
To date, 4 inventory updates have been conducted under Canada's Chemicals Management Plan (CMP). The first 2, in 2009 and 2012, focused on a subset of substances on the Domestic Substances List. The third update, in 2017, applied to substances on the Domestic Substances List, the Non-Domestic Substances List, and the Revised In Commerce List. It considered substances identified by emerging science, domestic and international regulatory programs as well as changes in Canadian commerce. The fourth update, in 2018 applied to certain quaterny ammonium compounds in Canadian commerce.

2018 quaternary ammonium compounds in Canadian commerce - Phase 1
2018 quaternary ammonium compounds in Canadian commerce – Phase 1 information summary
A summary of the information received as well as a compilation of the non-confidential information received in Excel and CSV formats for the Notice with respect to certain quaternary ammonium compounds in Canadian commerce – Phase 1 is available via the Government of Canada Open Data Portal.
2018 section 46 notice (mandatory survey)
In November 2018, a notice was issued in the Canada Gazette, Part I: Vol. 152, No. 46 - November 17, 2018 under section 46 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999). This notice applied to approximately 800 chemical substances. The information collected, including quantities in commerce and applications, will be used to inform the commercial status of these substances and to create an inventory of data on quaternary ammonium compounds in Canadian commerce.
2017 inventory update
2017 inventory update information summary - chemicals and polymers
A summary of the information received in response to the 2017 inventory update (chemicals and polymers) is available via the Government of Canada Open Data Portal. To complement this summary, the non-confidential information received is available in Excel and CSV formats and includes a list of the substances for which no information was submitted.
2017 section 71 notice (mandatory survey) - chemicals and polymers
In January 2017, a notice was issued in the Canada Gazette, Part I: Vol. 151, No. 2 - January 14, 2017 under section 71 of CEPA 1999. In April 2017, an amendment to the notice was published in the Canada Gazette, Part I: Vol. 151, No. 16 - April 22, 2017 to correct a discrepancy on page 144, in section 6 of the French version. This notice applied to approximately 1,500 substances. The information collected will be used to update the commercial status of the substances, inform priority setting, and support risk assessment and, if necessary, risk management activities.

2012 inventory update information summary
The non-confidential summary of information received from the second phase of the Domestic Substances List inventory update is available.
2012 update: substances for which no information was submitted under phase 2 of the Domestic Substances List inventory update
Analysis of mandatory and voluntary responses received from the section 71 notice published under phase 2 of the Domestic Substances List inventory update (December 2012) indicates that there are approximately 1,325 substances for which no information was submitted, including 260 polymers and 65 substances currently on the Domestic Substances List under "masked names".
The list of substances for which no information was submitted under phase 2 of the Domestic Substances List inventory update is available. These substances are being considered under the rapid screening and polymer approaches.
2012 section 71 notice (mandatory survey)
In December 2012, a notice was issued in the Canada Gazette, Part I: Vol. 146, No. 48 - December 1, 2012 under section 71 of CEPA 1999. This notice applied to approximately 2,700 substances in phase 2 of the substances in phase 2 of the Domestic Substances List inventory update.
This section 71 notice sought to obtain updated information on the commercial status of substances that are remaining priorities, to support any subsequent risk assessment and risk management activities, if applicable.
In August 2013, an amendment was published in the Canada Gazette, Part I: Vol. 147, No. 31 - August 3, 2013 to remove the substance Ashes (residues), CAS RN 68131-74-8 from part 2 of Schedule 1 of the notice.
