All pesticides used in Canada must be registered under the Pest Control Products Act . Pesticides are re-evaluated to ensure that they continue to meet health and environmental requirements. Re-evaluation may result in the revocation of a product or product uses. Health Canada may also request changes to a product's label, including mitigation measures, use sites and application methods.

Trinexapac-ethyl is a plant growth regulator used on turf cultivated in sod farms and on golf courses on perennial ryegrass grown for seed, and on cereals. The highlights of the re-evaluation decision for the active ingredient trinexapac-ethyl, published on August 18, 2022, are summarized below.

Risk reduction measures

  • Prohibited use on residential turf, including lawns, gardens, parks, playgrounds, cemeteries and schoolyards
  • On ryegrass grown for seed:
    • Use of a closed system for mixing and loading
    • Application in a closed cab equipped with a adequate air filter preventing any contact between the occupant and the pesticide when using more than 70 kg active ingredient/day.
    • No access to treated site before the end of the 10-day restricted-entry interval (REI)
  • Access prohibited to treated turf before the end of the 12-hour restricted-entry interval (REI).
  • Access prohibited to treated golf courses until treatment residues are dry
  • Update to the required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Aerial application prohibited, except on cereals
  • Updated buffer zones
  • Updated drift protection statements

Users must follow the instructions on the updated labels.

Using a pesticide contrary with the label directions is a violation of the Pest Control Products Act.
