News Release
23 new projects approved in four communities
Whitby, Ontario, May 23, 2017—The governments of Canada and Ontario are committed to investing in local infrastructure that ensures Canadians and their families have access to modern, reliable water and wastewater services that meet their needs. These investments safeguard the health and well-being of residents, protect waterways and preserve local ecosystems, while also laying the foundation for new economic opportunities to strengthen the middle class across the province.
Jennifer O’Connell, Member of Parliament for Pickering-Uxbridge, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Tracy MacCharles, Ontario Minister of Government and Consumer Services and Minister Responsible for Accessibility and Member of Provincial Parliament for Pickering—Scarborough East, on behalf of the Honourable Bob Chiarelli, Ontario Minister of Infrastructure, and Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for Durham Region, today announced that 15 new projects submitted by the Regional Municipality of Durham have been approved under the Government of Canada’s Clean Water and Wastewater Fund. The federal government is providing up to 50% of funding for these projects—$22 million. The provincial government is providing up to 25 percent of funding for these projects—$11 million, and the recipient will provide the balance of funding.
Thanks to this investment, residents across the Regional Municipality of Durham will benefit from projects such as the rehabilitation of existing watermains including upgrades to the Harmony Creek Water Pollution Control Plant. These projects are essential to keeping our waterways clean and our communities healthy and livable.
In addition to these projects, $1.2 million in federal funding for eight other water and wastewater projects will benefit Ajax, Brock and Pickering.
This investment is part of an agreement between Canada and Ontario for the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund.
