Parkland County celebrates official opening of the Devonian Trail

Parkland County, Alberta, September 23, 2017—The governments of Canada and Alberta recognize the importance of investing in infrastructure that encourages active lifestyles, improves community connections and helps preserve the environment.
The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Erin Babcock, MLA for Stony Plain, on behalf of the Honourable Shannon Phillips, Minister of Alberta Environment and Parks, His Worship, Rod Shaigec, Mayor of Parkland County, and Valerie Turner, Chair of the River Valley Alliance (RVA) Advisory Committee, on behalf of Brent Collingwood, Board Chair of the RVA, participated in a ceremony today to mark the completion of the Devonian Trail. This project is a key component of the RVA’s Capital Plan, an initiative to enhance and improve public access to the North Saskatchewan River and river valley through the addition of multi-use trails and information features.
This 7.2-kilometre trail now connects the University of Alberta Botanic Garden to Prospectors Point Park. Once completed, the full 88-kilometre-long trail network will span 18,000 acres, not only providing residents with more ways to stay active, but also helping bolster tourism and economic development in the region.

Overall, the federal government is contributing up to $30,000,000 through the Building Canada Fund – Major Infrastructure Component towards the River Valley Alliance Capital Program.
