New In-Canada 2D Temporary Resident Application Forms

Summary

Effective July 31, 2012, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will launch new two-dimensional (2D) bar code application forms for temporary residents (TRs) inside Canada. These forms are:

  1. Application to Change Conditions, Extend My Stay, or Remain in Canada as a Visitor or Temporary Resident Permit Holder (IMM 5708) (PDF, 477.39KB)
  2. Application to Change Conditions, Extend My Stay, or Remain in Canada as a Student (IMM 5709) (PDF, 488.83KB)
  3. Application to Change Conditions, Extend My Stay, or Remain in Canada as a Worker (IMM 5710) (PDF, 484.21KB)

These new forms will be applicable to all visitors, international students and temporary foreign workers inside Canada who wish to extend their stay or change their conditions. The Application to Change Conditions, Extend Your Stay or Remain in Canada (IMM 1249) form will continue to be accepted until November 1, 2012.

Background

In the autumn of 2010, CIC began modernizing its immigration application forms. These new in-Canada TR application forms are the next step in providing a modern, integrated immigration system and tools for both internal and external clients and stakeholders.

Current status

Currently, the IMM 1249 is utilized by TR applicants who wish to change their conditions or extend their stay in Canada on a temporary basis.

New forms

Effective July 31, 2012, the new 2D bar code TR application forms will be available online. Although the IMM 1249 form will not be obtainable, it will continue to be accepted by CIC until November 1, 2012.

The CIC website will be updated to reflect the transition between forms.

Form details

Applicants are encouraged to complete the new forms electronically in order to validate them by selecting the “Validate” button on the form. This will facilitate data input into the Global Case Management System.

CIC stakeholders and contacts should also be made aware of the new application forms, corresponding instruction guides and supporting documentation. This may involve requesting the removal of older version of paper forms and guides in the possession of internal/external partners and stakeholders.

All application forms must continue to be reviewed to ensure accuracy as well as completion, and offices must continue to retain the entire completed application form once processing is completed.

Note:

It is important to note that the new 2D forms (IMM 5708 (PDF, 477.39KB), IMM 5709 (PDF, 488.83KB), and IMM 5710 (PDF, 484.21KB)) are not e-Applications and are therefore not available through MyCIC. The applications must still be printed, signed, and submitted to Case Processing Centre, Vegreville (CPC-V) at the mailing address and method outlined on the following CIC web page: Case Processing Centre: Vegreville, Alberta. However, temporary residents who wish to change conditions or extend their stay as students, visitors or workers may also continue to use Online Services.
