Conditions of the Resident Requirement
This section contains policy, procedures and guidance used by IRCC staff. It is posted on the department’s website as a courtesy to stakeholders.
The Resident Requirement is part of the Citizenship Grant Process. Paragraph 5(1)(c) of the Citizenship Act sets out three conditions for citizenship applicants. They are:
- Applicant must be admitted to Canada as a permanent resident;
- Applicant must retain permanent resident status (i.e., not lose their permanent resident status before or during their citizenship application; and
- Applicant must accumulate a specified period of residence in Canada before applying for citizenship.
