Language test results

This section contains policy, procedures and guidance used by IRCC staff. It is posted on the department’s website as a courtesy to stakeholders.

Applicants must include a copy of their language test results in their application for it to be complete. Electronic copies of language test results are acceptable.

Language test results must not be more than 2 years old when IRCC receives the application.

Users may confirm language test results through online verification systems for each of the following designated language testing agencies.

Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP)

CELPIP offers more than one language test. Economic permanent residence applicants must take the CELPIP General test.

Test results should be verified through CELPIP’s online score report website. To validate tests, users will need to create an account and provide their log-in information. To create an account, users will need to obtain access credentials through their designated office administrator.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

There are several options for language tests with IELTS. Economic permanent residence applicants must take the “General Training” option. IELTS One Skill Retake is only acceptable for Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP) applicants.

To verify applicant identity and the authenticity of test results, users must register to access the online verification service. Once one person within the organization has access, they can extend access to others in the organization. Once a user has access, the user can enter the site with their user name and password and will then be prompted to enter a Test Report Form verification number.

The IELTS website describes additional features of the IELTS testing process.

Pearson Test of English (PTE Core)

Pearson has more than one language test available. Economic permanent residence applicants may only provide PTE Core test results as proof of language proficiency.

Test results should be verified through Pearson’s online Score Report Website (SRW). To validate or confirm PTE Core language test results through the SRW, users will need to create an account. To create an account, users will need to receive an invitation from a site administrator.

Consult the guide for using this service.

Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) Canada

Check TEF test report form certificates on the Authentitef verification website (available in French only).

Each processing office should have access to one shared verification account. Once users have registered, they can access the verification section through the Espace privé section of the TEF website.

The TEF Canada website provides additional information about the TEF testing process.

Test du connaissance du français (TCF) Canada

Candidates receive a certificate with levels for each competence and tables explaining score interpretation.

TCF test results may be verified through the organization’s score report website (available in French only).

Exemptions

As of January 1, 2015, the Public policy concerning economic class permanent residence applicants and Express Entry candidates whose language proficiency cannot be tested in all 4 language skill areas, due to a physical or mental disability exempts both the principal applicant and their accompanying spouse or common-law partner from providing evaluation results from a designated organization or institution in up to 3 of the 4 language skill areas. Instead, IRCC will accept notionalized scores using a language calculator tool. The language evaluation results, both those that could be completed and the notionalized scores, must be considered in the same manner as any other language evaluation results.
