Key Messages
- Over half of the Government’s commitment to resettle at least 40,000 Afghans (23,000 spaces) is focused on individuals and their families who supported the Government of Canada during our two decades in Afghanistan.
- This includes 18,000 spaces under the Special Immigrations Measures program and 5,000 spaces under a special family reunification program for extended family members of former Afghan interpreters.
- Each program has eligibility requirements, and individuals must meet those requirements to be eligible.
- We continue to explore additional avenues to bring more Afghans to safety.
If Pressed on of Role Language and Cultural Advisors
- Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is aware of the important role Language and Cultural Advisors played in supporting the Canadian military during its time in Afghanistan.
- While Language and Cultural Advisors were Canadian citizens or permanent residents at the time of their service to Canada, we understand some still have family members in Afghanistan.
If Pressed on Canadian Human Rights Commission Complaint and Comparison with Ukraine
- When responding to international crises, there are often similarities in that people may be fleeing persecution of some sort, but the immigration response may differ. Canada tailors each response to meet the unique needs of those who require our support. Although every situation is different, IRCC is always guided by the same values and principles.
If Pressed on Canadian Human Rights Commission Complaint
- All complaints before the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) are confidential. Accordingly, it would be inappropriate for me to comment on these cases. Further, any settlements are confidential and are subject to settlement privilege.
