The compacts are not legally binding; rather, they foster collaboration among the international community to better manage and respond to the global pressures of irregular migration and forced displacement.
These compacts fully respect state sovereignty, including the ability of countries to determine how to best manage their own borders and immigration systems in accordance with international law.
In line with the Global Compact for Migration, Canada works with country partners, international organizations, the private sector and civil society to help strengthen migration systems around the world that are safe, fair, and orderly.
For Canada, implementing the Global Compact on Refugees means finding new ways of working together—between development, humanitarian, peacebuilding, and immigration actors—to advance durable solutions for refugees.
