Canada has a proud history of resettling the world's most vulnerable people who are fleeing violence and persecution.
We work with referral partners to identify refugees most in need of resettlement through the Government-Assisted Refugee (GAR) Program.
GARs receive support during their first year in Canada, including financial assistance to help with settlement and integration. Many rely only on income support from the Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) for their basic needs.
Refugees and other newcomers also access settlement supports, including language training, employment services, and orientation.
RAP supports basic needs on arrival, including shelter, food, and immediate settlement services during the first year.
We continue to work closely with partners to support resettlement and integration.
Interim Federal Health Program
Resettled refugees are eligible for coverage under the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP).
In some cases, GARs may also receive additional support for IFHP co-payment costs through RAP, based on assessed need. This is provided on a case-by-case basis.
