After you apply: get next steps — Renounce (give-up) citizenship
Once we receive your application to renounce your Canadian citizenship, we will review it and begin processing. If your application is approved, you will be sent a renunciation certificate or confirmation of renunciation.
Some applications may take longer to process:
- If documents or fees (if applicable) are missing, we will return your application to you.
- If your case is complex, we may contact you to ask for more information or documents. Such cases may take longer to process.
A citizenship officer may need to interview you:
If so, we will notify you by mail of the time and place of your interview.
- If you live outside Canada, the Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate responsible for your area will contact you to let you know how the interview will be conducted.
